Here’s an interesting question for you to ask yourself — is there something you want to do or say that you’ve been holding back on, out of fear?
Most of us answer “yes” to that!
I invite you to watch this video clip — it’s under a minute — and then continue reading.
“You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” ~ Benjamin Mee (as played by Matt Damon in “We Bought a Zoo”)
Why does it help to tell yourself: you only have to do this for 20 seconds? Because that’s only one-third of a minute! It takes us more time to read out the instructions than to actually take a calming deep breath and then go have that conversation. Write the email that reaches out a hand of reconciliation. Pick up the phone and call that person you’ve been avoiding. Maybe there’s been a rift in the relationship and it’s been a stalemate, both sides waiting for “someone” to make the first move.
Use your 20 seconds to be the one willing to act from a place of love and forgiveness. I’ve heard a saying that I really like because it reminds us it’s okay to do something even when you are feeling nervous, anxious or fearful: Courage is just fear that’s said its prayers.
Try it, and let me know how it goes!
to your courage and success,
Evelyn Brooks
