Why do we like feedback?

This is the age of comments. Sharing. Giving feedback. Posting our personal opinions. It’s amazing! For people who have suffered from relationship problems all their lives, and have always been diminished, belittled and talked down to by bullies, it’s a revolution.

Enjoy the change. Because I believe it’s here to stay. And one of the reasons I feel it’s so important and beneficial is that once again “people” have a voice, and not just the big corporations. Take a look at all the influence social media and blogging have on current trends.

In addition, with so many choices available to us, it feels like a huge relief to be able to pick a certain software or widget because someone we like and trust said it’s good. It’s nice to know a friend — even if only a virtual friend we’ve “met” through blogs or other contact methods online — has vouched for the product or service.  Of course, that’s also why it’s important to know if the person is trustworthy. Do use caution when making big decisions, just as you normally would. Impulse buying because an ad says you must have it, is not the same as reading several reviews and getting a feel for what actual customers said in their feedback.  The reason it’s even better when they are friends you’ve got other connections with such as on Facebook, is that some “customer” reviews that are all-glowing might actually be part of the company’s promotional efforts and not true responses. (After you’ve read a few, you get to notice the ones that seem fake.)

Get in on the fun, and start expressing yourself. Here are 4 ways:

  1. Leave a comment when you visit a blog, even if just to say thanks to the person who wrote it. Just be aware that most savvy bloggers have anti-spam protection and if it looks like your only purpose for commenting is to leave a link for your commercial site, your comment won’t be approved. So take a moment to make it personal.
  2. If you don’t already have a social media account such as Facebook, get one!  It’s free and it’s easy to set up. You can post photos of yourself, family members, pets, favorite heroes. Let us know who you are. Stand for something, and start participating in the big party online.
  3. When you purchase something at an online store which requests feedback (such as Amazon, eBay, etc), go ahead and give your opinion about whether the seller gave an honest description, whether you’re happy with the purchase and so on.
  4. Each time you read a new book or listen to a new CD, go to a site such as Amazon and leave a review. State your opinion. Be somebody who counts! You never know who might need to read what you said in order to make a more informed decision about buying.

Get out there and state what’s on your mind, in a healthy, polite way.

Please, no ranting and sweeping statements based on anger instead of facts – there’s far too much of that already in this world. You will find that as you go about your day politely stating your opinion, you will gradually lose that stress inside that comes from being told all your life that your opinion is worthless.

Now go on, what are you sitting here reading this for? Leave a comment – retweet my blog post –  and share it with your friends.

Wake up to the fact that you are alive, and you can tell someone what your opinion is. If they don’t like it, well… that’s only their opinion!

your happiness guru,

Evelyn Brooks

You are so on target. Nothing goes further than a thank you or a "pat on the back" weather it be physical ,verbal, or written. Thank you!

Hi Evelyn. Thanks, you gave me food for thought about leaving comments and feedback when I purchase something. I usually don't, but am going to start from now on. You are right, others do need to know what we think about it. I enjoyed this post and have been reading you pretty regularly since the Ultimate Blog Challenge. Good stuff. Blessings,

It's funny that when we get in the habit of doing it, we realize how good it feels to interact with others. Even just taking a moment to leave a quick reply helps us feel more connected to the rest of the world, instead of isolated in stress & worry! :-)

I really enjoyed reading this. I am just now "getting in on the party" and it really is fun talking to people on their blogs, Twitter and Facebook. It took some adjustment to fit in the time but it was worth it. Now leaving review comments is the next step for me. I know how valuable it is to read customer feedback before buying something and perhaps that's why I like shopping at Amazon---so much feedback. Thanks for reminding us Evelyn!

Thanks for your comment, Jeannette! So glad you've joined the party. I am fairly new to it myself-- my blog isn't even a year old yet and it's only in the past few months that I've become a regular blogger! I am learning to leave more comments for other people, too. It's fun! Evelyn
