Inauguration Countdown Day 29–The Panic Button

Do you recall the 2008 financial crisis? Of course you do. Many people panicked over the sudden loss in value of their homes and investments. In response to that situation, realizing that I could help alleviate anxiety, I wrote my first personal development book, called Forget Your Troubles: Enjoy Your Life Today, a five-step stress management system that became a bestseller.

Now, here comes Donald Trump’s shocking win of the Electoral College votes. So many people began panicking as the polls began predicting his win that people seriously talked about leaving the country, unwilling to stay and watch him in action with that deadly 100-day plan of his to create mayhem and a lot of false promises of trickle-down wealth.

It may seem impossible not to panic, and yet when we allow those fearful emotions to gain hold and grow strong roots, we actually abdicate control of our lives to Trump and his pals. I still find it hard to believe that people I know voted for him—that’s a head-scratching moment for many progressives to find out someone you thought was on the same page actually voted for a man who has spewed hate at every opportunity. But that topic is for another blog.

Right now I want to address the sense of panic you may be feeling. I know of some people who are experiencing such distress that they feel life will never be the same. Again, that is handing over our thoughts to Trump on a silver platter and allowing him to pull our strings as if we are nothing but puppets reacting to everything he does and says. That’s a dream come true for a narcissist! Everybody watching and reacting to every little bitty thing you do? Most of us wouldn’t care for that, but narcissists thrive on that attention as it feels like adulation and envy to them.

I invite you to think about what you really want life to be like, for yourself and your fellow citizens. Put aside your fears of what Trump may or may not do next. Cut the wires to the panic button so it doesn’t have the ability to shock you with another charge of fear every time you think of Trump and his stated policies.

He’s made it clear he has no interest in the greater good of America and the world at large. That means it is up to the rest of us to step in and continue to work for progress.

America's New Breed of Freedom Fighters book coverAre you in? Okay, then put aside the panic, breathe mindfully, and realize this is an incredible opportunity for all of us to “fight” for the freedom and justice we desire.  More to come in the rest of this blog countdown to Inauguration 2017, and in my new book which will be released that day:  America’s New Breed of Freedom Fighters: With Liberty and Justice for All
