When I was growing up, there was one year in particular when I had an extremely important wish on my Santa list: Please let my little brother live. Please bring him home to us from the hospital. I was nine years old and he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor two years earlier.
Despite my fervent wish and prayers for his recovery – for a miracle — a few weeks before Christmas, my four-year-old brother died of cancer. And I felt it meant that God did not listen to me because I don’t matter, that what I do makes no difference at all, that it is useless to pray.
Today, I know there are many millions of us – the majority of American voters, in fact – who have similar feelings of shocked abandonment. How on earth could a benevolent universe allow a hateful man like Donald Trump to win the U.S. Presidency? How could this be? And yet, if we stay focused on the “why, why, why” questions, we’ll stay stuck in grief.
In fact, there are many reasons why we can see this situation as an amazing opportunity for great good. Think about the times when you experience the most growth in your own life. Is it when everything is humming along smoothly? Or, in contrast, is it the times when you felt stunned by an accident, a job loss, financial downturn, relationship problems, a health diagnosis that rocked your world? Those are the times when we reach deep within and we overcome seeming disaster by finding a stronger and higher level of love.
And, as a nation, we come together in disasters and create an even better outcome for more people, having been prodded to notice things that were under the surface all along and can now be healed.
This is part of the transformation of the world that we came here to participate in. Yes, we knew we would be challenged, but we are capable of creating great good if we don’t let the fear-demons gain the upper hand.
We progressives, liberals and independents have a crucial choice in front of us: do we really believe in our ideals? Do we really want to uphold the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence which preceded it? Do we really care about creating a better world, not just for a privileged few, but for all in the world who desire “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”?
Here’s what we can do with our wish for liberty and justice for all—we can imagine our wish fulfilled, hold that beautiful image strong in our hearts, and work with the laws of the mind to create the reality we desire. Together, we can triumph over the seeming disaster of the 2016 election. Together, we can and will make a difference—a positive difference.
In his book Feeling Is the Secret, Neville Goddard explains the process for us to use: “To impress the subconscious with the desirable state you must assume the feeling that would be yours had you already realized your wish. In defining your objective you must be concerned only with the objective itself. The manner of expression or the difficulties involved are not to be considered by you. To think feelingly on any state impresses it on the subconscious. Therefore, if you dwell on difficulties, barriers or delay, the subconscious, by its very non-selective nature, accepts the feeling of difficulties and obstacles as your request and proceeds to produce them in your outer world.”
Did you notice this sentence: “To think feelingly on any state impresses it on the subconscious”? That’s how Trump got elected—too many of us allowed our emotions to be manipulated by Trump’s fear and hate-based rantings and promises to create havoc.
I’ll get into all of this in greater detail in my new book America’s New Breed of Freedom Fighters—coming on Inauguration Day.
Are you in? Okay, then put aside the panic, breathe mindfully, and realize this is an incredible opportunity for all of us to “fight” for the freedom and justice we desire. More to come in the rest of this blog countdown to Inauguration 2017, and in my new book which will be released that day: America’s New Breed of Freedom Fighters: With Liberty and Justice for All
