That might seem overly obvious, but it’s really amazing how often we simply stay in a rut, day after day, doing the same kinds of things, as if the To Do List rules our every action.
Now, I’m not saying you should stop cleaning up after yourself in the kitchen or dump all your responsibilities — but EVERY DAY you “should” do at least one thing that is not part of the regular system of your daily life.
What could this “new thing” be? Here are some ideas to get you started:
- instead of eating your lunch at your desk at work, or at the kitchen table at home, go outside with it! Don’t take along work to do or bills to pay. Simply enjoy a half hour of people-watching or bird-watching, depending on where you are. If you can find a park or a place with trees, all the better, because you’ll get a nice shot of oxygen being out among all those green leaves. Your brain needs plenty of oxygen throughout the day in order to keep alert and well-running — sitting in a stuffy house or office with recycled air can make you feel drowsy and sluggish.
- Are you in the habit of daily meditation time? If not, definitely add this to your routine because even 15 minutes of quiet time where you release your worries and let your mind focus on something such as your deep and slow breathing in and out (you can count your breaths if that helps you tame your busy chattering mind) can energize and revitalize you. You’ll be more productive and happier, too!
- Take a walk. If you claim you don’t have time, I won’t argue with you because I think arguing is a childish way of trying to convince the other person “I’m right and you’re wrong!” But ask yourself this: did you have time to brush your teeth and comb your hair this morning? Did you have time to get dressed? To eat breakfast? Then you can find 15 minutes to walk, even if it means walking in place while you brush your teeth. Keep your body moving so it won’t rust out. Movement helps your muscles release the tension that leads to stress and anxiety.
- Fill in the blank with more ideas of your own for how you can shake up your daily routine. When you shift your position in life by doing something in a different way, you allow your mind to view your problems and challenges from a fresh perspective! And you keep yourself young-at-heart. Here’s that blank space I promised: __________________________________________________________________
